that's District of Columbia, not District of Cabot.ģ. Hence we have the capital, Washington, D.C. So the American colonialists instead turned to Columbus as their hero, not England's Cabot. Giovanni Cabot, another Italian) "discovered" Newfoundland in England's name around 1497 and paved the way for England's colonization of most of North America. So why does the United States celebrate the guy who thought he found a nifty new route to Asia and the lands described by Marco Polo? This is because the early United States was fighting with England, not Spain. He never got close to what is now called the United States. On his subsequent voyages he went farther south, to Central and South America. What Columbus came across was the archipelago of the Bahamas and then the island later named Hispaniola, now split into Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Until his death he claimed to have landed in Asia, even though most navigators knew he didn't. If Columbus discovered America, he himself didn't know. And let's ignore that whole Leif Ericson voyage to Greenland and modern-day Canada around the year 1000. Yes, let's ignore the fact that millions of humans already inhabited this land later to be called the Americas, having discovered it millennia before. His crew wasn't nervous about falling off the earth. The Columbus flat-earth myth perhaps originated with Washington Irving's 1828 biography of Columbus there's no mention of this before that. Columbus, in effect, got lucky by bumping into land that, of course, wasn't Asia. For these reasons, he figured he could reach Asia by going west, a concept that most of educated Europe at the time thought was daft - not because the earth was flat, but because Columbus' math was so wrong. He also thought Europe was wider than it actually was and that Japan was farther from the coast of China than it really was. Ĭolumbus, a self-taught man, greatly underestimated Earth's circumference. This text was well known throughout educated Europe in Columbus' time. In the second century, Claudius Ptolemy wrote the "Almagest," the mathematical and astronomical treatise on planetary shapes and motions, describing the spherical Earth. And by the third century B.C., Eratosthenes determined our planet's shape and circumference using basic geometry. provided the physical evidence, such as the shadow of the Earth on the moon and the curvature of the Earth known by all sailors approaching land. Ancient Greek mathematicians had already proven that the earth was round, not flat. If he did, he was about 2,000 years too late. Columbus set out to prove the world was round.

When this happens, writing becomes a real joy.” It has never been wrong when it comes to me like that. I wake up and what has come to me in my dreams is good. And other times, I see conceptual structures. Sometimes I get the syntax down, and it’s a perfect sentence. In my dreams sometimes I can see whole paragraphs and pages shifting around. I see this happening more when I keep a good writing routine as well as a good meditation routine. It’s not even an issue anymore, it gets sorted out. Or it doesn’t come up as a conscious thought – but when I sit down to write, something has cleared and I’m ready to move on. And after meditation, an idea will come up and it’s resolved. Sometimes when you’re writing you hit the stuck spots and you just don’t know which path to take. It makes a huge difference in my personal life and in my writing. “When I started the TM technique, it felt like the most natural thing ever, so deeply right. Enhance the sharpness of your small, medium and large details selectively. “The Details Enhancer filter helps you create dramatic photos and brings crystal-clear sharpness to your images. Again let me quote from the Skylum website. And thinking about it also with some night-time iPhone photos – lets see of Luminar can rescue these digital snow-storms better than Lightroom can. I am going to put Luminar head to head with Lightroom on some of my night photography photos taken with my Olympus OM-D EM5 Mk2. I have just had to use Photoshop to reduce the noise in some very dark photos, so this is something else that I need help with. Micro four thirds cameras have smaller sensors, which are more susceptible to noise. 5 Luminosity and Colour DenoiseĪs regular readers will know I have been experimenting with Olympus micro four thirds cameras. It preserves both colours and details for more realistic detailed photo.”Īgain check out the example on the Skylum page (I am not allowed to publish my own examples yet). This is what Skylum say.Ĭomparing to regular contrast, Smart Contrast is more careful and sophisticated. Check out the example on the Skylum website – this is quite scary as well! 4 Smart contrast There are two parts to this – Accent AI and Sky Enhancer AI. I have lots of photos taken with my iPhone and DLSR that just need a quick boost and posting on my websites, so this might be just the tool for that. I will give this a go for quick editing of photos for my travel websites, Photos of Santorini and Paxos Travel Guide. Sounds scary but the best thing I can do is give this a try and show you the results. This is a super intelligent clarity tool that analyses the photo and does stuff to it to make it look better. Luminar 4 automatically identifies objects (including people and faces, clouds, water, buildings and more) and improves them in an intelligent, content-aware way.”Įrm blimey. “Boosting details with traditional Clarity and Structure tools often make parts of a photo look horrible. Let me quote from the Skylum website what this is. But I do – it works fantastically well to give super quick completely realistic results. If you don’t like this that is fine – everyone is entitled to their opinion. And do my clients care if I have swapped the sky? If I am photographing a building I only have that one day to do it, so if the weather is rubbish I have to do something after the event. No this is just the same thing but done using AI – maybe that is what people do not like. People have been replacing the sky for years, along with lots of other stuff, using Photoshop. The other thing I would like to say is to all those people who are calling this out for making fake photos is this – this is nothing new. And no layers (I have written in the past about my lack of understanding of layers!). I was not expecting it to work as well as it does if I am being completely honest but having tried it on a variety of photos I can say that it is truly remarkable, and more importantly something that I will use in my commercial photography work. When I say you I mean all of us of course. if you thought this was a gimmick then in my opinion you are wrong. I won’t go on about this again other than to say two things.įirstly. That is the AI bit, which is like I say truly remarkable.Īnd it then does a bit of relighting of the scene.Īnd you can tweak the results so have control over the end result. There is no masking required – it selects the sky and nothing else. To find out lots more about this fantastic tool check out the blog post I wrote last week called Luminar 4 and AI Sky Replacement are nearly with us! OK – that is that done – lets get stuck into the good stuff – the 9 New Luminar 4 Features I am looking forward to using (ok some of them I am already playing with!). I have not paid for the beta version of Luminar 4 either. I have signed an NDA so am not able to publish any photos yet, but I am allowed to write and talk about what I am looking forward to using in advance of the general release on November 18 2019.Īnd to practise of course and get some photos ready for release date. Yes I have a beta version of Luminar 4 which I am testing. Luminar 4 screen shot from Skylum How have I got Luminar 4? If you buy Luminar 4 or any other Skylum product using my affiliate link I get a commission. Full disclosureīefore I go on I have to say that I am a Skylum Affiliate. Yes I am excited for Luminar 4 and the new things it has to offer. That is 7 new features, but I will add to this list saving time with automation and getting new looks at the click of a button, as well as just having something shiny and new! What are the 9 new features I am looking forward to using? They are AI Sky Replacement, AI Structure, AI Enhance, Smart contrast, Luminosity and Colour Denoise, Detail enhancer and the new interface. Luminar 4 will be released on November 18th 2019. The only difference between the TWAIN interface and launching the app directly is that when I launch the app directly, scans are saved to files, but when I launch the app via TWAIN, scans are sent to the calling application (Photoshop Elements) and no files are created.Īt this point, it should be obvious why a scanner that only has a TWAIN driver really can’t be converted to ICA - because the Image Capture application (or some other app using the Image Capture APIs) is expecting to directly control the scanner, not launch a third party scanner application. When I select one, the associated application is launched. When I choose to scan from Photoshop Elements, the TWAIN import mechanism reports the TWAIN-compatible applications (e.g. It supports TWAIN and one of my installed scanner applications (EpsonScan) includes a TWAIN driver. I think this is best explained through an example. It’s a software interface, not a device driver interface. ICA is a proper device driver system to allow a common API to be used for accessing a wide variety of scanners. TWAIN and ICA are two completely different beasts, event at a conceptual level. Maybe what they meant is that ScanSnap Home software doesn’t have a TWAIN driver? If so, that’s sad to hear that there’s yet another feature omission vs. I am not sure how that is relevant since the function worked when I was running Mojave. The support people told me the function didn’t work because the S1300i doesn’t have a TWAIN (whatever that means). I wonder if that implies that it would accomplish what you want? But as I mentioned in the article, ExactScan Pro did offer to install a TWAIN Bridge. Very interesting! I don’t have PDF Pen, or I’d try it out for you. Now I am wondering if ExactScan will bring back that capability ? It works, but I miss the convenience of scanning directly into PDF Pen. I can scan using the new ScanSnap Home software. It would automatically use the ScanSnap Manager software to complete the scan, which would show up in PDF Pen with no other intervention on my part.Īfter the upgrade I can no longer initiate scans within PDF Pen. Prior to the Catalina upgrade I was able to initiate scans from within PDF Pen Pro 10. With digital sublimation, your tablecloth will always look as good as new, ready to echo your brand's name in marketing campaigns. Even worse, one round in the washing machine and your pristine material is ruined by all the bleeding colors. Now, imagine fishing out your new tablecloth from last season's trade show only to find it faded and wrinkled. When it comes to buying a custom tablecloth, you want to choose a long-lasting one that will serve as a crowd-puller in your regular corporate events.
bit: a type of horse tack placed in the mouth of a horse in order to help riders communicate with the animal. One concho was designed with praying hands to remind her of what she had been through.” “We also made conchos for her saddle, and each told the story of one person in her life who was really meaningful. “We worked the cancer ribbon into the design, so the spurs tell her story,” Ocken says. One project the couple completed was a set of spurs for a woman who had survived cancer. “We pay close attention to detail, and create functional and artistic pieces nobody has had before.” “We’ve kept the business small and manageable, but we’ve been surprised at the positive response we have gotten and the number of connections we’ve made,” Ocken says. The couple spends a lot of late evening hours in a small shop on their property where they fashion their cowboy gear. “He’s not really ugly,” Ocken is quick to point out. Their horses have unusual names such as Doctor Bob’s Dun Cuttin’ and Ugly But Quick. “Justine has a pony she shows.”Īmong the family’s ponies are White Buttermilk, Buckmoo and Dolly. “Jarrett has shown horses in 4-H since he was 2, and he plays football,” their mother says. Now, they’re passing their love for horses on to their children. The family lives on 16 acres with their dogs, five horses and four ponies.Īppropriately, Lyn and Jay met in college while competing on the Ball State University Equestrian Team. Jay also shoes horses (a job he has loved since the age of 14), and the couple has three children – 10-year-old Jarrett, 4-year-old Justine and 1-year-old Jhett. Jay Ocken teaches industrial technology for high school students in Whitko Community Schools, while Lyn teaches elementary art in Huntington County Schools. Metalwork is one of many hats the Ockens wear. “I fell in love with that aspect of it, so now Jay does all the metalworking, and I do the engraving.” “We went to Canada and worked with a bit and spur maker there, and I went to Texas and worked with an artist and engraver,” Ocken says. Soon, people began asking the couple to make customized buckles, bits, spurs and conchos, so the Ockens launched a part-time business, Ocken Bit & Spur Makers, in 2003. “We wanted some nice cowboy gear, but didn’t have the money, so we began making bits, spurs and other products for ourselves as a creative outlet.” “My husband and I are both teachers, and we both have shown horses all our lives,” Lyn Ocken says. Instead, you want to provide the user with localized, bodily sensations and tactile effects exactly where – and when – it matters. The key is to embed localized, HD haptic technology that doesn’t shake the entire device. In fact, it referenced that the global haptic component market will be worth $4.8 billion by 2030! Thin, light, flexible piezo actuators ARE the way of the future, providing consumers with new levels of “near touch” interactivity and engagement with their devices. The mounting position does not necessarily have to be centered at the device.I recently read an interesting article about the latest detection solution that uses localized haptics to replace the button on smart phones – it’s fantastic to see the increasing adoption of haptic technology for these types of applications. The actuator / booster block (schematically illustrated below, length about 6 cm) has to be attached tightly onto the device which has to be vibrated - ideally on the rear side- by screwing or gluing. A proper electrical driving of the piezo actuator. An efficient mechanical implementation of the piezo actuator(s) into the HMI.How to Implement Haptivity ® into your Device? Key Points With a suitable mechanical device this piezo shrinkage is converted into a lateral movement which is coupled into the touch surface. According to the piezo-electric effect, the piezo(s) change the geometry. In certain configurations this can be the actuator piezo itself (by utilizing the reverse piezo-electric effect of the actuator functionality), but in general it should be a separate pressure sensing component.Īfter a pressure threshold has been exceeded (which is detected from the implemented controller), a single sine half wave of ~30 V is applied to the actuator piezos. Therefore, the device must comprise a component that is able to measure the applied pressure. It is absolutely essential to generate a distinctive surface vibration only after the operator has exceeded a certain pressure threshold – similar to a mechanical button. In order to simulate a mechanical button it is not sufficient to apply just a vibration to the surface that has been touched from the operator. Common structure for uni-morph and bi-morph, therefore A-A' and B-B' are different. The number of layer lamination is shown as "8 layers," which is a typical example. The technology is covered by more than 100 Kyocera patents.Various design elements as sliders or rotators can be realized.Haptic parameters of the simulated button (the subjectively perceived „click“) are controlled by S/W and are widely adjustable only by S/W.The actual mechanical movement of the touch surface is 50-80µm.In certain configurations the actuators can also be used as pressure sensors. Actuators are multilayer piezos with very small construction space requirements (60 mm x 10 mm x 10 mm). Simulation of a mechanical button on any surface (touchpad / touchscreen).Outstanding Features of Kyocera’s Haptivity ® Technology The implementation of haptics into industrial displays is challenging since there are specific requirements regarding dust- and waterproofness. Haptics are not only requested for use cases with the incorporation of a display, but also for the replacement of singular mechanical switches or even complete keyboards. The industrial HMI market is asking for haptic solutions for about 2 to 3 years, similar to the automotive HMI market.Ĭurrently, for the industrial market there is no solution under mass production. So far, haptic feedback systems used in the automotive market are all based on magnetic solutions – with respective drawbacks like constructions space, slow response and limited functionality. The automotive industry would like to make the overall interior smoother and more homogeneous – and consequently replace mechanical switches but would like to keep the haptic feedback of those switches the driver is used to. The operation of automotive T/Ps without haptic feedback does not offer a „fool proof“ operation and is consequently distracting the driver as the input has to be verified with different senses. The automotive market is asking for haptic solutions for about 2 to 3 years. Haptivity ® is Kyocera’s virtual reality technology that allows the simulation of a mechanical knob and further haptic effects on any surface.
